On Flopstar Blog we enjoy making up ridiculous honorific titles to the artists we are loving, but in this case there is no shred if irony: Sakis Rouvas is the Michael Jackson/Elvis Presley of Greece. A megastar who not only shaped what modern pop is in Greece, but also still has immense amount of power within the music scene. His discography goes back 20+ years, and the entire thing from his Eurovision entries to his old-school rock is all pretty damn good. It would be hard for me not to get excited over a new Sakis single or album, especially after his last album “Parafora” pushed the limits of Greek electronica and still remains one of my favorite albums of all time.
The new single is titled “Open Eyes”/”Πιο ψηλά” and it’s a total quality jam. It basically picks up where “Parafora” left off 3 years ago. It’s an electro-house influenced pop track that is way edgier than the typical pop/rock and Modern laïká you hear all over Greek radio. Greece doesn’t really put out much in terms of crossover appeal, but “Open Eyes” is one of the few recent Greek singles that could chart throughout Europe with a little effort. This is why Sakis will always remain the pinnacle of the Greek music scene.
