Samantha Jade has been around for years. She appeared on a Step Up OST, she released that gay closet case anthem Secret, but she never really went anywhere. That is of course until she won Australian X Factor.
Firestarter, her second single after winning the show, is a blazing dance track (in the style I wish someone from our American talent contests would produce). The video for the song is as straight forward as the song itself is. She is seen posing while back up dancers do faceless choreography behind her. It’s all not bad, but it’s not exactly mind blowing slayage either. So far, she has remained firmly in the safety net of adequate. I would love to see her do a video similar to her scandalous Secret video, where she played a detective on the hunt for clues finding out if her boyfriend was secretly gay or not, (spoiler alter: he was). The video gets better toward the end, when Sam is soaking wet and getting intimate with a muscular hottie in a similar fashion to HyunA’s much better Ice Cream video.
It’s nice to see she never gave up and is now finding success all these years later. She just needs that killer song and video that will define her as a pop icon, rather than simply coming off like a pretty decent Ricki-Lee wannabe.
